Once I made the decision to make 2D characters and 3D environments, I found it quite hard to think of many existing examples that represented this. The only game to my knowledge, 'Hotel Dusk' Uses coloured, 3D backdrops/environments and 2D, black and white characters. This gives the game a sort of sketchy 'comic' like feel because of the way the characters are designed. I really like this unique way of merging the two medias together because it creates new level of a interaction, it's like putting fiction into the real world, but still keeping that element of 'fantasy'.
Including 2D characters into a 3D environment almost makes it seem like a cross in different worlds, or parallel universes, which is interesting to me. Seeing as my concept is based around a living Milk carton 'boy' with personalities and characteristics. Putting him into a realistic looking world that differed from his own, would create that sense of 'imagination', placing characters into are world. Which for children is something that is done often, with an eclectic imagination. Children are always visualizing their toys and other such characters into their own lives. using this cross over of 2D and 3D I believe will represent that 'imagination' prospect that thrives so much in childhood. Catering for the younger audience using the artistic style.
Here are some images representing the 2D to 3D elements in Hotel dusk.
